ABDA President Thomas Preis: “Pharmacies are to act, and will act, even more as low-threshold local health providers in future. What does that mean concretely? Put concretely, the range of services of local pharmacies can then be summed up as follows: More vaccinations. After influenza and coronavirus, pharmacies will now be able to offer citizens every vaccination, with the exception of the few live vaccines.”

ABDA President Thomas Preis: “That is shown by our Apothekenklimaindex, the pharmacy climate index published yesterday, for which 500 pharmacy managers are surveyed every year. The central finding is this: for the significant new services there is already a very great willingness among pharmacies to implement them promptly. On vaccination alone we can assume, according to this survey, that the new provision in the ApoVWG will probably double the number of vaccinating pharmacies.”

Health Minister Dr Carsten Linnemann: “I think we are taking the right path here. Yes, you now have more options. Including, by the way, going ahead in the field of prevention, in the field of vaccination. […] I admit that doctors have contacted me in recent days too. This is a topic that is being discussed intensely behind the scenes. Some representatives of doctors say: ‘Well, there is an extension of competences.’ [..]. We have 1.5 billion doctor contacts a year and we want to reduce them. Then I do think it is the right path for us to try to establish contact with the customer at a low threshold through pharmacies, to carry out prevention […] then that is exactly the right path for winning the future. And indeed together with the doctors and with the pharmacists. That is my firm conviction.”

We welcome the strengthening of primary care in order to raise vaccination rates, and we support new pharmacies as they start out.

That includes, for example, orderly digital appointment booking, good patient information, and support with questions about the STIKO vaccination recommendations and the applicable legal requirements.
